A Korean language speaking contest for foreigners will be held in celebration of Hangul Proclamation Day on Oct. 10.
Organized by a local language tutoring service 247MyTutor, in partnership with the Korean Language Society, Kwangwoon University and EBY Talkingclub, the competition is open to foreigners of all ages and levels of proficiency in the Korean language who reside here.
The preliminary round will take place online at 247MyTutor.net, where interested applicants can apply until Sept. 26 with a YouTube video of their speech, skit or performance in the Korean language for their entry. Finalists will be announced via Facebook and Instagram on Sept. 29.
The selected 10 will compete on Oct. 14 at Gangnam Theater. The final round will be livestreamed via Facebook.
Participants will be judged by a panelist of three judges, comprised of Korean-speaking professionals, based on the content of their speech, pronunciation, manner of presentation and audience’s response. Half of the audience’s response assessment will come from online viewers via Facebook Live.
The winner will receive $500 in cash while $200 will be each given to those who place second and third. All finalists will receive a Korean language book for participating.
“This ceremony will help foreigners who have an interest in K-drama, K-pop, and K-beauty to have an opportunity to freely express themselves in Korean,” said Sukhan Jeong, CEO of 247MyTutor.
